Samford Softball Tops Troy in Opening Weekend Finale

TROY, Ala. – Behind a strong pitching performance from McKenzie Newcomb and timely hitting, the Samford softball team picked up a 5-1 victory over the Troy Trojans on Sunday to conclude the Trojan Invitational and Opening Weekend.

With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 1-4 in 2024. Troy drops to 4-2 after splitting a doubleheader on Sunday.

Junior Sara Squillace tallied the second four-hit performance of her career on Sunday and came around to score once. Joining Squlliace with a multi-hit game, Logan Champion recorded a pair of base knocks that included an RBI single in the opening frame that gave Samford an early lead.

In the circle, Newcomb allowed just one run over seven innings of work while fanning five Trojans to pick up her first win of the year.

The top of first saw eight Bulldogs come to the plate and was highlighted by back-to-back RBI base hits from Champion and Ansley Yantis that scored Linsey Hargis and Katie Campbell to give Samford a 2-0 advantage before Troy had a chance to bat.

Samford extended the lead in the top of the fourth when freshman Olivia Shaw was hit by a pitch and advanced to third after a pair of singles from Abigail Dorsett and Squillace. Shaw came home to score when Hargis was hit by a pitch to make it a 3-0 contest.

Following a pitching change in the same half inning, Grier Bruce made it 5-0 Bulldogs with a two-run RBI single down the left field line that saw Dorsett and Squillace cross home plate safely.

Troy answered in the bottom of the fourth with a single run but was held in check for the remainder of the game. After surrendering the run, Newcomb only allowed a trio of singles over the final 3.1 innings to secure the first Bulldog win of the season.
