Bulldog Softball Drops Doubleheader On Friday At UNF-JU Invitational

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. – To open the second weekend of play for the 2024 season, the Samford softball team fell 11-1 to the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame and 3-2 to the Dolphins of Jacksonville to start the UNF-JU Invitational.

With the pair of defeats, Samford falls to 1-6 in the early going of the season. Notre Dame improved to 4-2 while Jacksonville moved to 3-5 on the year.

In game one, Jordyn Partain took the loss for the Bulldogs in the circle after allowing six runs on five hits and five walks in an inning plus worth of work. Freshman Karley Fuller relieved Partain and only surrendered a trio of runs in her four-inning appearance.

Offensively, freshman Katie Campbell paced the Bulldog attack with a double for Samford's lone extra-base hit of the day. Ansley Yantis tallied a base knock while Logan Champion had a hit and scored once.

Before Samford had a chance to bat in the bottom of the first, Notre Dame jumped out to a 3-0 lead to open the game then matched with three more in the second to take a 6-0 advantage to the home half of the second.

The lone Bulldog run of the game came in the bottom of the second when a sacrifice fly off the bat of freshman Olivia Show plated Champion cut the Irish advantage to 6-1.

Notre Dame answered with a run in the top of the third before putting the game away by scoring two in the fourth and two in the fifth for the 11-1 final.

In the second game, McKenzie Newcomb tossed her second complete game of the season, but was dealt the loss after allowing three runs on five hits in her six-plus innings of work.

Despite scoring two runs in the nightcap, the lone Bulldog hit in the game belonged to Grier Bruce

The Dolphins brought home back-to-back singles in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 advantage after one inning in the books.

In the top of the third, Rylee Butler was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning before coming around to score one batter later on a Jacksonville error of the bat of Abigail Dorsett. Samford tied the game at two-all when Dorsett came home on an error that was committed by the Dolphin first baseman.

A handful of quiet middle innings led to Jacksonville hitting a leadoff solo home run in the bottom of the seventh to win 3-2.
