Samford Softball Drops Extra Inning Affair With UAB In Home Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – To open the home slate of the 2024 Season, the Samford softball team fell heartbreakingly to the UAB Blazers by a score of 10-4 in 10 innings on Wednesday afternoon.

After dropping the first midweek of the year, the Bulldogs sit at 1-9. UAB improves to 4-6 in the early going of the year.

Freshman Karley Fuller got the starting nod in the circle for Samford and was given a no-decision after allowing three runs over the first five innings of the contest.

In relief, Sara Bond took the loss for the Bulldogs as the sophomore surrendered seven runs, including six in the 10th inning, during her appearance in the circle.

Linsey Hargis had her best day in a Samford uniform on Wednesday as the junior collected her first multi-hit game of the season which was highlighted by a two-run home run in the fourth inning.

Joining Hargis in the home run department, Katie Campbell launched her team-best second dinger of the season. Sarah Squillace tallied a pair of base knocks while Logan Champion drove in a run on the day to round out the Samford offensive attack.

UAB opened the scoring in the top of the first when the third blazer batter of the game doubled to deep center field. Samford answered an inning later when Campbell unleashed a rocket over the wall in left to make it a 1-1 game after two innings in the books.

Samford took a 2-1 advantage in the home half of the third when Squillace came home on a Champion RBI groundout before Hargis' two-run blast made it 4-1 Bulldogs entering the fifth.

The Blazers scored a single run in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to force extra innings before exploding for six runs in the top of the 10th to complete the 10-4 comeback.
