Softball Blows Out Southern Miss In Cocky Classic Finale

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – In a game that saw the Bulldogs score their most runs in nearly a decade, the Samford softball team smashed the Southern Miss Golden Eagles by a score of 16-0 in five innings to wrap up the 2024 Cocky Classic.

With the win, Samford moves to 2-11 on the year and Southern Miss drops to 4-8 in 2024.

Samford's 16 runs on Saturday are the most that the Bulldogs have plated in a game since scoring 17 against St. Peter's in 2014. The squad's 16 base hits on the night are the most in a contest since Samford knocked around Furman for 18 in 2016.

In the circle, Jordyn Partain tossed a complete game one-hitter for her first win of the 2024 campaign. The junior only allowed one run and one hit for a total of two base runners on the evening. Partain also fanned five Golden Eagles.

Offensively, the Bulldog trio of Sarah Squillace, Ansley Yantis and Lindsey Nelson each had three hits, batted in three runs and scored twice in the blowout victory.

Logan Champion joined in on the action with a 2-for-4 night of her own and scored once with an RBI. Grier Bruce and Katie Campbell rounded out the offensive onslaught with a pair of runs driven in each.

The runs came early and often for the Bulldogs scored two in the first inning. A Squillace two-run triple highlighted a three-inning that put Samford up five after the opening two frames on Saturday.

Four runs came across in each of the third and fourth innings that were highlighted by a Nelson two-run double in the third and a two-run double by Campbell in the fourth inning.

To add on, a pair of Bulldogs came around to score on a Yantis single to left center in the fifth to cement the 16-0 victory.
