Softball Drops Pair of Games To UT Martin and North Alabama On Opening Day

TROY, Ala. – On the opening day of the 2024 season, the Samford softball team fell 8-3 to UT Martin Skyhawks before dropping the nightcap 1-0 to the North Alabama Lions on the first day of the Troy-hosted Trojan Classic.

The pair of defeats drops the Bulldogs to 0-2 on the season for the first time since 2022, when Samford finished the year with a record of 34-19. The wins moved UT-Martin and North Alabama to 1-0 in the very early season.

In game one, senior Ansley Yantis paced the Bulldog offense with a pair of hits to open the year. The upperclassman duo of Sarah Squillace and Lindsey Nelson each drove in a run while freshman Katie Campbell homered in the fifth for the first dinger of her career.

In the circle for Samford, McKenzie Newcomb was tagged with the lost. The reigning Southern Conference Pitcher of the Year allowed five earned runs on 11 hits over four innings of work with four strikeouts. In relief, Karley Fuller allowed a pair of unearned runs in two innings during her colligate debut.

UT Martin jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first inning before Nelson singled home Logan Champion to cut the Skyhawk in half after the top of the second before UT Martin tacked on another run to make it a 3-1 game after two innings played.

The Bulldogs got back to within one in the top fourth when Squillace slapped a ball back up the middle for a base knock that scored McKayla Cothran. UT Martin answered immediately by plating a trio of runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend the advantage to 6-3.

Samford's final run in the opening game of the season came in the top of the fifth when Katie Campbell launched her home run over the wall in left field before the Skyhawks added a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth for the 8-3 final score.

In game two, the Samford offense fell victim to a perfect game by North Alabama's Aliva Wilken.

Despite taking the loss in the circle, Jordyn Partain pitched a complete game and allowed one run on four hits. The junior also struck out a pair.

The lone run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth when the Lions strung together a pair of singles to scratch across a run.
