Bulldogs Fall In Midweek Action To Jacksonville State

Birmingham, Ala. – The Samford softball team came up within one run of erasing a three-run deficit in the bottom of the seventh against Jacksonville State on Wednesday evening, but ultimately fell 4-3 to the Gamecocks at Samford Softball Stadium.

With the defeat, Samford drops to 6-19 on the season and 0-3 at home in 2024. The Gamecocks of Jacksonville State improved to 10-15 for the year.

Jordyn Partain was dealt the loss for the Bulldogs on Wednesday as the junior allowed four runs on seven hits and eight walks. Partain concluded her eighth complete game of the campaign with four strikeouts.

McKayla Cothran led the Samford offense once again on Wednesday with a pair of base hits and two more RBIs while also scoring a run in the contest. Logan Champion also drove in a run with Sarah Squillace and Addison Smtih each coming touching home on Wednesday.

After a calm opening inning, Jacksonville State broke through first as a Gamecock put the visitors up 1-0 in the top second. Partain danced around danger in the top third to keep it a one-run game by inducing a bases-loaded double play ball that kept the Bulldogs in the contest.

The Gamecocks loaded the bases again in the fourth inning and managed to scratch across a pair of runs to make it a 3-0 game after the first four innings of play. Jacksonville State's final run of the contest came in the fifth when Partain hit a Gamecock batter with a pitch during a bases-loaded situation.

Down to the final six outs, Samford's attempted comeback was jumped started in the bottom of the sixth when back-to-back singles from Cothran and Olivia Shaw led to a Katie Campbell walk to load the bases. In the next at-bat, Champion put a drive into a ball that fell into the Gamecocks' centerfield at the warning track but was deep enough to score Cothran on a sacrifice fly. Shaw was deemed to leave second base early and was called out before a lineout ended the inning.

The comeback continued in the seventh when Smith and Squillace singled with two outs to bring up Cothran. In the second pitch of her at-bat, Cothran smacked an RBI double to left-center that plated Smith and Squillace to bring Samford to within a single run before Jacksonville State got a flyout to escape the non-conference game with a 4-3 win.
