Bulldogs Swat Alabama State In Homestand Finale

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – To close out a four-game homestand, the Samford softball team upended the Alabama State Hornets 4-0 on Wednesday night at Samford Softball Stadium.

With the win, the Bulldogs improved to 7-23 on the year. Wednesday marked the first home victory of the season for Samford. Alabama State slides to 15-18 after the midweek contest.

Jordyn Partain picked up her fourth win of the season on Wednesday as the junior tossed five strong shutout innings. Partain only surrendered a hit in each of the first two frames while also fanning six Hornets in the process.

Sara Bond relieved Partain and pitched a pair of shutout innings to earn her first save of the 2024 campaign. Wednesday's win was the third shutout of the season by the Bulldog pitching staff.

To conclude the victory, the duo of Partain and Bond retired 17-straight Alabama State batters.

Four of the six Bulldog hits on the evening belonged to Olivia Shaw and Logan Champion as the pair each went 2-for-3 with a home run. Shaw drove in pair and scored once while Champion plated one run and scored twice on her own.

Aiding the Samford attack on Wednesday, Sarah Squillace and McKayla Cothran each recorded a base hit.

At the end of three innings played each team had two hits aside before Champion led off the home half of the fourth with a no-doubt solo home run to left field. The dinger was Champion's second of the season and first since Feb. 17 against North Florida.

A quiet fifth inning gave way to a loud sixth that was started with a Cothran single up the middle. A stole base and a Champion single pushed Cothran to third before a Katie Campbell sacrifice fly brought the junior home to make it a 2-0 contest.

On the very next pitch, Shaw unleashed her two-run homer to left field that scored Champion and put the game out of reach at 4-0 heading to the seventh.

In the final frame, Bond slammed the door shut with a pair of groundouts and a strikeout to seal the 4-0 victory for Samford.
