Samford Drops Weekend Finale At Wofford On Saturday

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After securing a series victory on Friday, the Samford softball team stumbled to the Wofford Terriers by a score of 5-4 on Saturday at Hope Field.

With the loss, the Bulldogs will enter the month of April with a 9-24 record and a 2-4 mark in Southern Conference play. Wofford improved on Saturday to 12-14 and 2-4 on the year.

On an afternoon that saw all three members of the Bulldog pitching staff make an appearance in the circle, Jordyn Partain got the start for Samford on Saturday. Partain only allowed one run on a single hit in three innings of work but was given a no-decision for her efforts.

Karley Fuller was dealt the defeat for the Bulldogs as the freshman allowed three runs in 2/3 of an inning pitched. Sara Bond tossed the final 2.1 innings surrendering a run on four hits.

Offensively for the Bulldogs, Linsey Hargis went 2-for-3 with a run driven in to lead the Samford attack. The trio of Logan Champion, Katie Campbell and Ansely Yantis each had a hit and scored once in the finale.

Following a scoreless opening frame, Campbell gave the Bulldogs an early boost in the second inning when the freshman launched a no-doubt home run over the wall in left field. The homer was Campbell's team-high ninth of the season and put Samford up 1-0 after an inning and half played.

The Bulldog lead expanded to 2-0 in the top of the third when Sarah Squillace swatted a ball to right center for a double that plated Ansley Yantis, who reached base with her own double to open the frame. Squillace's double extended her season-best hitting streak to nine games and her reach base safely streak to 11.

Wofford answered in the home half of the third when a two-out Samford error allowed a Terrier to scamper home from second to make it a 2-1 contest after three innings played.

A Champion double to left center opened the top of the fourth leading to Champion scoring on a Woffordd throwing error on an attempted sacrifice bunt from Olivia Shaw, who also reached base on the sequence. Shaw advanced to second on a wild pitch before coming home to score and to make it a 4-1 contest on a Hargis RBI triple.

Following a Samford pitching change, Wofford tied the game with a trio of runs in the bottom fourth including a two-run single that made it a 4-4 game heading into the final innings.

A leadoff double by Wofford's Havalynn Abernathy proved costly for Samford as Abernathy scored two batters later to give the Terriers a 5-4 advantage.

The Bulldogs could only muster a pair of walks over the final two innings as Wofford salvaged the weekend with a 5-4 victory in the finale.
