Bulldogs Open Weekend By Dropping Home Contest To Belmont

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – In only the second home game of the 2024 season, the Samford softball team stumbled 6-3 to the Bruins of Belmont on Thursday afternoon at Samford Softball Stadium.

The defeat drops the Bulldogs to 3-17 on the year while Belmont improves to 10-6 for the 2024 campaign.

Junior pitcher Jordyn Partain was handed her seventh loss of the season in the circle for the Bulldogs. In her seventh complete game of the year, Partain allowed six runs, three earned, and fanned one Bruin batter.

Offensively for the Bulldogs, Samford backstop Logan Champion picked up her first three-hit game of her junior campaign by going 3-for-3 with a run scored. Sarah Squllace added two more base hits of her own while Ansley Yantis, Addison Smith and Linsey Hargis each drove in a run on the afternoon.

Following a shutdown first inning from both starting pitchers, Samford opened the scoring when Katie Campbell came home to score on a Belmont error that came off the bat of Hargis.

Belmont answered immediately in the bottom of the second with an RBI single to right field that notched the game at 1-1 with innings in the book.

Back-to-back singles off the bats of Champion and Olivia Shaw opened the bottom of the fourth. Two batters later, Champion scored on a Yantis sacrifice fly that was followed by a Smith single up the middle that handed Samford a 3-1 advantage heading into the later innings.

Belmont took control of the game in the top of the sixth with four runs scored on three hits with a pair of Bulldogs errors that extended the inning.

The Bruins added another run in the seventh to make it a 6-3 final.
