ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Samford women's basketball team shot just 22 percent from the floor as the Bulldogs were eliminated from the Southern Conference Tournament in a 66-45 loss to Wofford Thursday afternoon at Harrah's Cherokee Center.
With the loss, Samford ends its season with a record of 14-16. Wofford improved its record to 17-12, and the Terriers advanced to Friday's semifinal round where they will take on UNC Greensboro.
"I really thought we got off to a pretty decent start," Samford head coach
Carley Kuhns said. "Things were flowing for us, we were moving the ball pretty well. And then we kind of hit a spurt where we didn't see the ball go through the hole and I think that changed the whole trajectory of the game."
Samford was led in the loss by freshman
Alonya Waldon with nine points.
Lexie Pritchard and
Alyssa Tarpley tallied eight points each.
Emily Bowman grabbed a game-high eight rebounds for the Bulldogs.
For Wofford, Maddie Heiss tallied 18 points to lead the Terriers. Annabelle Schultz had 16 points, while Rachael Rose scored 12 points and Indiya Clarke added 10 points for Wofford.
Wofford took an early 7-4 lead with 4:30 to go in the first quarter following three free throws by Schultz. Samford fought back to tie the game at 12-12 on a driving layup by Waldon in the closing seconds of the first period.
Samford took a four-point lead at 16-12 with 9:18 left in the second period after a pair of free throws by Waldon. With Samford leading, 19-15, Wofford went on a 17-0 run to take a 32-19 lead with 2:08 left before halftime after two free throws by Schultz. A late three-pointer by Samford's Tarpley cut the lead to 32-22 heading into the locker room at halftime.
Wofford started the third quarter with an 8-0 run to take a 40-22 lead with 7:25 to go in the period after a jumper by Heiss. After Wofford stretched its lead to 19 points at 43-24, Samford fought back to cut the lead to 15 points at 43-28 after a layup by
Carly Heidger with 5:37 to go in the third period. Wofford held a 53-38 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Wofford led by as many as 23 points in the fourth quarter. The Terriers closed out the 66-45 win.
