BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford softball team closed the home portion of the 2024 schedule on Sunday by dropping a 4-0 contest to the Western Carolina Catamounts at Samford Softball Stadium.
 
Before the game, the Bulldogs honored the senior trio of Ansley Yantis, Abigail Dorsett and Lindsey Nelson. The ceremony was highlighted by Dorsett, who has been injured since mid-February, taking the field in centerfield during the reading of the squad's lineup. 
 
In her first action since April 6, Karley Fuller took the loss for Samford in the circle. The freshman gave up four runs with two of those being unearned on eight hits and four walks on Sunday. 
 
The Samford offense could only muster five hits on the afternoon against Western Carolina's Tessa Juett. Two of the five hits belong to McKayla Cothran with the others being spread between the trio of Sarah Squllace, Katie Campbell and Linsey Hargis. Oliva Shaw's 12-game hit streak also ended on Sunday as the freshman went 0-for-3.
 
Western Carolina jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a sacrifice fly that happened after a Bulldog field inning error. 
 
Samford's best scoring chance of the day came in the bottom of the second when the Bulldogs loaded the bases with back-to-back two-out singles and a walk. The Catamounts got a strikeout to end the threat and the inning. 
 
The visiting Catamounts added two more runs in the top of the fourth with a solo home run and an RBI single to right center to make it 3-0. 
 
Western's final run of the weekend came on a Bulldog error in the top of the sixth to for the 4-0 final. 
 
UP NEXT
Samford will end the regular season with a four-game road trip that begins on Tuesday with a midweek trip to Jacksonville State. The first pitch is slated for 5 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
