Bulldogs Fall In Game Two At UNCG

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Samford University baseball team dropped a 14-4 decision in eight innings in game two of a three-game series at UNC Greensboro Saturday afternoon at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

UNCG's win evens the series at one game apiece after Samford's 8-4 win Friday night. Samford dropped its record to 33-17 overall and 13-4 in Southern Conference play. UNCG improved its season mark to 30-18 overall and 14-6 in SoCon play. Even with the loss, Samford remains in first place in the SoCon standings, while UNCG is still in second place in the conference.

"We just didn't play well enough today in any phase," Samford head coach Tony David said. "We wasted a great performance by (Noah) Berry, who was really dominant. He was thrust into that weekend role when (Brooks) Rice was shut down and has been good for us. Our guys have always bounced back well and I expect us to do that tomorrow."

Samford was led in the loss by Garrett Staton, going 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Lucas Steele went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple and two RBI. Noah Berry (0-1) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up four runs, just two earned, on eight hits to take the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs.

For UNCG, Aidan Brewer went 2-for-4 with a double and four RBI. Trey Truitt and Jacob Dilley drove in three runs each for the Spartans. Julien Peissel (3-2) tossed 7.0 innings, giving up two runs on five hits to earn the win on the mound for UNCG.

Samford got the scoring started with two runs in the top of the third inning when Steele tripled to right center field to drive in Staton and Josh Rodriguez for a 2-0 Bulldog lead. The Spartans tied the score with a run in the third inning and another in the fourth inning, and then took the lead for good at 4-2 with two runs in the fifth inning.

The score remained 4-2 until UNCG broke the game open with seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for an 11-2 Spartan lead. Staton hit a two-run home run in the top of the eighth inning to cut the lead to 11-4. The Spartans plated three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to end the game on the run rule with a 14-4 UNCG win.

The teams will conclude their series with a game Sunday. The game is set for a 12 p.m. (CT) start.
