Samford Baseball Drops Senior Day Game To Wofford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team fell by a score of 8-2 to Wofford on Senior Day for the regular-season finale for both teams Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

"This was another furstrating day at the plate for our guys,"  Samford head coach Tony David said. "We had so many hard hit balls through the day with nothing to show for it. They did a really good job not giving us any help with walks or errors and they made several good plays."

Samford ended its regular season with a record of 34-20 overall and 14-7 in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs finish second in the SoCon and will be the No. 2 seed in next week's SoCon Tournament at Fluor Field in Greenville, S.C. The pairings for the tournament will be announced by the SoCon office later this weekend. Wofford now has a record of 35-17 overall and 12-8 in league action.

"(Jake) Holifield and (Alex) Flood were great in relief to give us a chance," David said. "We don't lose series, especially and home, but this just wasn't our weekend. This is the abosolute best time of year. We have a great team and our guys will be ready for the SoCon Tournament next week."

Samford was led in the loss by Lucas Steele, going 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI. John Anderson also drove in a run for the Bulldogs. Brooks Rice (4-4) pitched 1.1 innings, giving up four runs on two hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford.

For Wofford, Tyler Hare went 3-for-5 with a home run and one RBI. Jack Renwick went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI. Dixon Black went 2-for-5 with two RBI, while Daniel Jackson also homered for the Terriers, going 1-for-4 with one RBI. John Gray (1-0) pitched 4.0 innings in relief, giving up no runs on four hits to earn the win on the mound for the Terriers.

Samford jumped on top first with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Steele tripled down the right-field line to drive in Garrett Howe the game's first run. Steele then scored on a sacrifice fly by Anderson for a 2-0 Samford lead.

Wofford took control of the game with five runs in the top of the second inning. Renwick and Black both had two run singles in the inning, and Marshall Toole scored on a passed ball for a 5-2 Wofford lead.

The Terriers pushed their lead to 6-2 when Jackson hit a solo home run to right field in the fifth inning. In the ninth inning, Wofford's Hare homered to right field to make the score 7-2. Renwick later doubled to drive in Tyler Bak to make the final score 8-2.
