BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team dropped a 20-15 decision to Mercer in the second game of a three-game Southern Conference series Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the loss, Samford fell to 30-16 overall and 11-3 in Southern Conference play. Mercer improved to 24-21 overall and 5-8 in SoCon play.
"This is not what Doubleday had in mind when he invented the game," Samford head coach Tony David said. "I could not be prouder of the way the guys fought back. We were down 10 in the middle innings and got the tying run to the plate twice."
For Samford in the loss,
Garrett Howe went 3-for-5 with a home run and three RBI.
Josh Rodriguez went 3-for-5 with a double and five RBI.
Garrett Staton also drove in three runs, going 2-for-6 with a double.
Blake Bortak (1-1) gave up four runs on two hits without recording an out to take the loss on the mound for Samford.
For Mercer, Ty Dalley went 4-for-6 with two home runs and six RBI. Jess Ackerman (5-3) tossed 4.0 innings, giving up five runs on four hits to earn the win on the mound for Mercer.
Mercer jumped on top first with three runs in the top of the second inning. Samford then took a 4-3 lead with four runs in the bottom of the second. Mercer then plated four runs in the third inning, two runs in the fourth and five runs in the fifth to take a 14-4 lead. Samford answered with seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 14-11.
In the sixth inning, Mercer plated three runs and Samford added one to make the score 17-12. Mercer pushed the lead to 18-12 with a run in the seventh inning. After Samford cut the lead to 18-14 with two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning, Mercer made it 20-14 with two runs in the top of the ninth. Samford plated the final run in the bottom of the ninth inning to make the final score 20-15.
