BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University soccer team opened the 2024 season with an impressive 3-1 win over Tennessee Tech Thursday evening at Shauna Yelton Field.
"It was hot and humid, and it was hard on both teams," Samford head coach
Todd Yelton said. "I don't think I'm ever too sad when we score three goals because, generally we're pretty good defensively. I'm proud of the kids, they worked hard and battled."
The Bulldogs took the lead first when
Anna Major netted a goal in the 29
th minute off an assist from
Clare Nicholas. The teams went into the locker room at halftime with Samford owning a 1-0 lead.
The scoring picked up in the second half, with Samford pushing its lead to 2-0 when
Layton Glisson scored off an assist from
Brooklyn Miller. Tennessee Tech came back when Neve Renwick scored a goal off an assist from Abigal Davis in the 59
th minute to make the score 2-1. Samford netted the final goal when
Fleming Dean scored in the 79
th minute off an assist from
Brigid McElderry.
Glisson led Samford with five shots in the win, while Renwick tallied four shots for Tennessee Tech.
Mia Krusinski played the first half in goal for Samford, saving one shot without allowing a goal, while
Peyton Hull played the second half, saving four shots while allowing one goal. Maggie Conrad played the entire game in goal for Tennessee Tech, saving four shots and allowing three goals.
Samford will play host to 15
th-ranked Notre Dame on Sunday, Aug. 18 at 6 p.m. at Shauna Yelton Field. Admission to the game is free.
