BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford soccer team battled cross-town rival UAB to a 3-3 draw Thursday evening at Shauna Yelton Field.
With the result, Samford now has a record of 1-1-1. UAB's season mark is also 1-1-1.
Fleming Dean,
Ella Simpson and
Caroline Donovan scored a goal each for Samford. For UAB, Abbey Burns scored two goals, while Sydney Bolinger added the third goal.
Samford got the scoring started when Dean scored a goal off an assist from
Brooklyn Miller in the 15
th minute for a 1-0 Samford lead. UAB tied the score at 1-1 when Abbey Burns scored on a corner kick in the 26th minute. Burns added another goal in the 39
th minute as UAB took a 2-1 lead into the locker room at halftime.
Samford knotted the score at 2-2 when Simpson scored on a penalty kick in the 80
th minute of the game. Donovan gave Samford a 3-2 lead when she scored off assists from Simpson and
Clare Nicholas in the 84
th minute. UAB tied the contest just one minute later when Bolinger scored off an assist from Maia Sirota to knot the score at 3-3.
Dean and Donovan led Samford with three shots each.
Mia Krusinski played the first half in goal for Samford, saving four shots and allowing two goals.
Peyton Hull played the second half, saving one shot and allowing just the one goal.
For UAB, Burns, Mia Leath and Brielle Rochester had two shots apiece. Goalkeeper Anika Toth played the full 90 minutes, saving six shots and allowing three goals.
Samford will host in-state rival Troy Sunday at 3 p.m. at Shauna Yelton Field. Admission to all home soccer games is free.
