Samford Earns 4-0 Win Over Troy

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford soccer team earned its first shutout of the 2024 season with a 4-0 victory over in-state rival Troy Sunday afternoon at Shauna Yelton Field.

"It's all exciting stuff," Samford head coach Todd Yelton said. "We always want to keep a clean sheet. We felt like we probably gave away some goals against UAB that were correctable, so I was really happy and proud of the kids today. To score four goals, especially with as many goals as we graduated from last year's team, it's a committee effort and they're just doing a great job."

With the win, Samford improved to 2-1-1. Troy fell to 1-2 with the loss.

For Samford, Layton Glisson, Hanna Rae Himes, Alexa Minestrella and Anna Martin netted one goal each as the Bulldogs pulled away from their in-state rivals.

Glisson started the scoring with a goal in the 10th minute off an assist from Brooklyn Miller as Samford took an early 1-0 lead. In the 28th minute, Himes netted a goal to give Samford a 2-0 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

In the second half, Minestrella scored in the 80th minute off an assist from Sarah Holland to push the Samford lead to 3-0. Anna Martin added the final goal of the contest in the 82nd minute to make the final score 4-0.

Samford played three different goalkeepers in the match. Mia Krusinski played the first half, while Peyton Hull started the second half in goal. Emma Donley played the final 8 minutes and 21 seconds as the three combined for the Bulldogs' first shutout of the season.

Samford will go on the road for the first time in the 2024 season when the Bulldogs play at Army Wednesday, Aug. 28. The game is set for a 5 p.m. (CT) start from West Point, N.Y.
