BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford soccer team erased an early deficit to come back and take a 4-2 Southern Conference win over Wofford in the Bulldogs' annual Shauna's House Game Friday evening at Shauna Yelton Field.
With the win, Samford improved to 5-6-1 overall and 2-1 in Southern Conference play. Wofford fell to 5-6-1 overall and 1-2 in league play.
"I think that Wofford team is a very good attacking team," Samford head coach
Todd Yelton said. "One of the things we've been talking about is to have more perseverance and grit. I was really proud of the girls tonight, I thought they demonstrated that for sure."
Ella Simpson led Samford in the win with two goals.
Sam De Luca and
Brooklyn Miller added a goal each, while
Whitaker Buchanan had an assist in the game.
Peyton Hull played all 90 minutes in goal for Samford, allowing two goals to pick up the win.
For Wofford, Ines Obradovac and Madelin Smolenski had a goal each. Megan Childress tallied an assist for the Terriers. Elizabeth Navola played in goal for the Terriers, allowing four goals and saving five shots.
Wofford's Smolenski got the scoring started with her goal in the seventh minute of the contest. Simpson tied the game with a goal on a penalty kick in the 14th minute to bring the score to even at 1-1. In the 19th minute, Obradovac scored for Wofford off an assist from Childress to give the Terriers a 2-1 lead. Simpson then scored on another penalty kick in the 27th minute to knot the score again at 2-2.
Samford took control of the game in the second half. In the 59th minute De Luca scored off an assist from Buchanan to give Samford a 3-2 advantage. Miller then scored in the 63rd minute to make the final score 4-2.
Samford will next play at The Citadel on Thursday, Oct. 3. The game is set for a 2 p.m. (CT) start from Charleston, S.C.
