STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Samford women's tennis team won its season opener against Bellarmine, 4-1, but fell to Mississippi State, 4-0, in the second match in Starkville.
 
Samford won all three matches on the doubles courts in the Bellarmine match. Sophomore Margaret Jaraczewski and freshman Hailey Troup won the first doubles match of the day with a commanding 6-1 finish on the No. 2 court. At No. 3 doubles, Eleni Liakonis and Meredith Taylor earned a 6-2 win to secure the doubles point. The No. 1 doubles match was not finished.
 
The Bulldogs continued to dominate in the singles competition winning 5 out of the 6 single matchups. Emily Surcey defeated Bellarmine's Ekaterina Tikhonko 6-3, 6-1 at No.1. On the No. 3 singles court, Jaraczewski defeated Marika Caruk, 6-4, 6-3. At No. 5 singles, Taylor earned a 6-3, 6-1 win over Reese Parker. Bellarmine earned its lone win at No. 4 singles, and the matches at No. 2 and No. 6 singles were not finished.
 
 Following the win, Bulldogs then took on Mississippi State for their second match of the day. The Bulldogs battled but could not overcome MSU, falling, 4-0.

Samford will next play Jacksonville State at the Samford Tennis Center on Friday, Jan. 24.
