Meritt Hits 1,000 Kills During Bulldogs Sweep of The Citadel

CHARLESTON, S.C.- The Samford volleyball team earned a 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-21) win over The Citadel Friday night in Charleston, S.C.

Samford is now 7-11 overall and 2-5 in Southern Conference play with the win. The Citadel fell to 0-17 overall and 0-7 in league play.

The win featured Kaleigh Meritt hitting 1,000 career kills as a Bulldog. The milestone for Meritt happened in the second set when the kill put her team up, 18-16. She went on to have a total of 14 kills in the match and lead her team.

Ally Cordes followed Meritt in kills with 13 and 7 digs. The Samford Bulldogs collected nine aces in the match, Emma Sorensen tallying four service aces.

For The Citadel, Rachel Reininger led the way with 13 kills and seven digs.

In the first set, Samford raced out to an 5-0 lead after a kill by Sydney Waller. The Citadel fought back to cut the lead to two at 18-16. The Bulldogs extended the lead back out to four points at 20-16 and eventually Samford took the first set by a score of 25-17 off an attack error from The Citadel.

In set two, Samford and The Citadel traded points all the way up until the final two points. Sorenson collected two of her four service aces in this set. The final two points scored by Samford were kills from Waller and they took the second set, 25-23.

Samford took an early 4-1 lead in the third set following a kill by Greer Golden. Their lead was as large as 5 points during the set from an service ace from Cordes at, 17-12. The Samford Bulldogs took the third set, 25-21 and the match, 3-0.

Samford will stay on the road and play against Mercer Saturday evening in Macon, G.A. at 5 p.m. The match will not be broadcasted but can be followed on social media or Live Stats.
