Soccer Wraps Up A Share Of SoCon Regular Season Title With Impressive 3-0 Win Over ETSU

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –  The Samford soccer team wrapped up at least a share of the Southern Conference regular-season title with an impressive 3-0 win over ETSU Sunday afternoon at Shauna Yelton Field.

With the win, Samford improved its record to 9-2-5 overall and 6-0-2 in Southern Conference play. The title is Samford's 11th regular-season championship since joining the SoCon in 2008. ETSU dropped its record to 8-3-6 overall and 3-1-4 in league play.

ETSU is coached by head coach Jay Yelton and assistant coach Matt Yelton, the brothers of Samford head coach Todd Yelton.

"It's hard, it's really hard," Todd Yelton said of playing against his brothers. "This is not my favorite game, to be honest. I have tremendous respect for my brothers. What they've done there is pretty amazing, especially when you look at the injuries that they have and to be where they're sitting."

Samford jumped on top early when Mamie Carman scored a goal off assists from Sam De Luca and Jessica Askey in the 11th minute for a 1-0 Samford lead. The teams went to the locker room at halftime in a 1-0 game.

The Bulldogs added to their lead when Sarah Holland scored an unassisted goal in the 46th minute for a 2-0 Samford lead. Martha Bishop added a goal in the 78th minute off an assist from Avery Stevens to make the score 3-0.

For the game, Caroline Smith had a team-high three shots for Samford, all on goal. Holland, Bishop and Fleming Dean had two shots each. Samford goalkeeper Peyton Hull posted her SoCon-leading 10th shutout of the season, saving six shots in the contest.

For ETSU, Grace Eatz led the team with five shots. Goalkeeper Addison Yelton saved nine shots in the contest.

Samford will wrap up its regular season by playing at UNC Greensboro on Sunday, Oct. 26. The game is set for a 1 p.m. (CT) start from Greensboro, N.C.
