GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Samford soccer team earned the outright Southern Conference regular-season title with a 2-1 win over UNC Greensboro in the regular season finale for both teams Sunday afternoon at the UNCG Soccer Stadium.
With the win, Samford ends the regular season with a record of 10-2-5 overall and 7-0-2 in SoCon play. The Bulldogs had already sewn up a share of the championship entering Sunday's game, but the win gives them the outright title. Samford is now unbeaten in 14-straight games, tying the school record in the category.
This is the 11th regular season championship for Samford since joining the SoCon in 2008. Samford previously won or shared the title in 2011, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2021 spring, 2021 fall and 2022. UNCG now has a record of 3-11-3 overall and 2-4-3 in SoCon play. Samford will be the No. 1 seed for the Southern Conference Tournament and will host its portion of the tournament quarterfinals Friday, Oct. 31 and semifinals Sunday, Nov. 2.
UNCG jumped on top first with an early goal when Morgan Brubaker scored off an assist from Taylor Mentzer in the fourth minute for a 1-0 Spartan lead.
Samford knotted the score at 1-1 when
Sarah Holland scored an unassisted goal in the 12th minute.
Mamie Carman scored off an assist from
Sam De Luca in the 21st minute to give Samford a 2-1 lead.
For the game, De Luca led Samford with four shots. Holland,
Fleming Dean and
Martha Bishop had three shots each. Goalkeeper
Peyton Hull had seven saves, while allowing just the one goal.
For UNCG, Laney Smith led the team with three shots, while Brubaker and Mairead Gayer had two shots apiece. UNCG goalkeeper Emma Malone played 83:52 in goal, saving four shots and allowing the two goals.
In Friday's quarterfinal round of the SoCon Tournament, Samford will host the winner of Tuesday night's game between Wofford and The Citadel. Chattanooga and Furman will play the other quarterfinal hosted by Samford. The semifinals will be played next Sunday at 1 p.m., and the championship game will be played on Nov. 9.
