Samford Soccer Earns Impressive 5-0 Win Over The Citadel Thursday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –  The Samford soccer team scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the game on its way to an impressive 5-0 win over The Citadel in the team's 10th-annual Shauna's House Game Thursday afternoon at Shauna Yelton Field.
 
The Shauna's House Game is held annually to benefit orphans in Ukraine. With the win, Samford improved its season record to 6-2-4 overall and 3-0-1 in Southern Conference play. The Citadel is now 4-5-2 overall and 1-2-1 in league play.
 
"I think we got off to a great start," Samford head coach Todd Yelton said. "You don't want to chase a game in this league, it's just too hard, teams are too good. So, it was nice to get a few of those goals early."
 
For Samford in the win, Sam De Luca scored two goals. Clare Nicholas had a goal and two assists, while Fleming Dean and Annie McBride had a goal each and Sarah Holland, Mamie Carman and Becca Koenig had an assist each.
 
Samford goalkeeper Peyton Hull posted her eighth shutout of the season. She saved three shots in producing the clean sheet.
 
For The Citadel, Adrienne Trerotola led the way with two shots. Goalkeeper Zoe Santos saved six shots in the contest.
 
Samford scored quickly, with De Luca scoring off an assist from Nicholas in seventh minute of the contest. Also in the seventh minute, Nicholas scored on a penalty kick for a 2-0 Samford lead. Dean scored off assists from Nicholas and Carma in the 11th minute to make the score 3-0.
 
McBride scored an unassisted goal in the 37th minute to push the lead to 4-0 heading into the locker room at halftime. De Luca scored her second goal of the game, this one off assists from Holland and Koenig in the 59th minute to make the final score 5-0.
 
Next up, Samford will play at Furman on Sunday, Oct. 5. The game is set for a 1 p.m. (CT) start from Greenville, S.C.
