GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Samford soccer team battled Furman to a 2-2 draw Sunday afternoon at Stone Stadium.
With the tie, Samford is now 6-2-5 overall and 3-0-2 in Southern Conference play. The Bulldogs remain in a first-place tie with ETSU in the SoCon standings. Samford has now gone unbeaten in 10 consecutive games. Furman is now 8-2-3 overall and 2-1-2 in SoCon play.
After a scoreless first half, the scoring picked up considerably after halftime. Samford's
Clare Nicholas got the scoring started in the 47th minute with a goal from deep off an assist from
Sarah Holland. Furman answered when Katelyn Nixon scored off an assist from Ellie Herrman in the 54th minute to knot the score at 1-1.
Samford took the lead again in the 74th minute when
Mamie Carman scored off an assist from
Brooklyn Miller to make the score 2-1. Furman's Briyah Drayton scored off an assist from Jessica Mattson in the 85th minute to once again tie the score at 2-2.
For Samford in the game, Nicholas, Holland, Carman,
Sam De Luca,
Martha Bishop and
Becca Koenig had two shots each. Goalkeeper
Peyton Hull saved two shots in the contest.
Furman was led by Norah Roller with three shots. Furman goalkeeper Reese DeJong saved five shots for the Paladins.
As a team, Samford had 13 shots, to 12 for Furman. The Paladins had six corner kicks, while Samford had four corners. The Bulldogs had 13 fouls, while Furman had six.
Next up, Samford will return home to play host to VMI on Friday, Oct. 10. The game is set for a 4 p.m. start from Shauna Yelton Field.
