BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford volleyball team picked up a 3-1 (25-17, 22-25, 25-16, 25-17) win over Western Carolina Thursday evening in the Pete Hanna Center for their second win of the week at home.
Four Bulldogs had double digit kills in the match.
Kaleigh Meritt led the team with 16 kills,
Ally Cordes had 15,
Sydney Waller had 11 and
Greer Golden had 10. It was also a match full of service aces with nine total for the Bulldogs.
Brooklyn Drumwright tallied four,
Amelia Johnston had three and Shea Brutmyer and Cordes each having one.
Set one opened with the Bulldogs scoring the first six out of eight points. 3 out of 16 of Meritt's kills came in the first few minutes of the match. Bruntmyer's service ace gave the Bulldogs an early seven-point lead, 15-7, on the Catamounts. Meritt would go on to give the Bulldogs the first set with a set point kill assisted by
Tatelyn Brandsma.
In set two, Bulldogs and Catamounts traded points up until the middle of the match when the Bulldogs found themselves down four points after a couple of kills from the Catamounts and attack errors, 17-21. Samford then would go on a 3-0 scoring run but couldn't bounce back before the Western Carolina took set two, 25-22.
Bulldogs scored first in set three and opened with a 4-0 scoring run. A kill from
Sydney Waller in the middle of the set gave the Bulldogs a two-point lead, 17-15. The third and fourth service ace for Drumwright would come late in the third set making it 21-16. Bulldogs would go on to score the final 10 of 11 points of the set and win it, 25-16.
In the fourth and final set, Waller opened with back-to-back kills followed by the Bulldogs seventh service ace of the night to make the set 4-1. Johnston's third ace would make the set 18 to 10. Late in the set Bulldogs were up 21 to 13, Golden would then have back-to-back kills to push it to set point.
Janie Stinchcomb would give the Bulldogs the set, 25-17, and match, 3-1, with her sixth kill of the night.
