BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford men's basketball team wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule today as it hosted NAIA opponent Reinhardt inside the Pete Hanna Center. The Bulldogs went up early and never trailed on their way to an 85-49 victory. The Bulldogs move back over .500 on the season with the win as they enter the new year with a 7-6 record.
The Bulldogs faced their second-straight non-NCAA opponent after defeating Bryan on Monday afternoon. Without
Keaton Norris,
Jadin Booth, and
Jaxon Pollard for the game, the Bulldogs didn't shoot the ball as well from the floor to start the game, but still took an 11-0 lead over the first seven minutes.
Dylan Faulkner and
Zion Wilburn each had nine points in the opening half as the Bulldogs dominated in the paint 26-2 against the Eagles.
Judson Bjornstad had his best performance in a Samford jersey as he scored 10 of his game-high 16 points in the first 20 minutes.
After knocking down 18 threes on Monday, the Bulldogs didn't quite find the range in the first half, going 3-for-14 from deep. Defensively, they overwhelmed their visitors, holding them to 19 percent shooting in the half as they took a 41-17 lead into the locker room.
After building a 30-point lead, the Dogs went deep into their bench in the second half.
Zach Lamey reached a career-high for the second-straight game as he scored 14 points, knocking down three shots from behind the arc. Calab Harrison scored six points and pulled down seven boards in extended minutes off the bench while
Will Shaver finished with four points and eight rebounds.
Kam Martin reached double-figures, finishing with 12 points in just 20 minutes of play.
The Dogs shot 48 percent from the field for the game, 34-of-71, while holding the Eagles to 27 percent. After hitting eight threes in the second half, Samford finished 11-of-38 from deep on the day. The Dogs dominated the glass 57-35 and outscored Reinhardt 17-1 in second-chance points.
After a busy schedule to start the season, the Bulldogs have a break through the rest of the month. They open Southern Conference play when they return, traveling to face VMI on Jan. 1 and UNCG on Jan. 3. Samford has their SoCon home-opener against Western Carolina on Jan. 7.
