BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford softball team returned to play at home today for a single game against Indiana State as they wrapped up play at the Samford Tournament. The Bulldogs finished off a perfect weekend as they had a comeback win over the Sycamores 4-3. The fifth-straight win for the Bulldogs takes their record to 6-2 on the year.
Karley Fuller got the ball for the Dogs as she made her third start of the season. She was greeted rudely as she gave up three runs in the opening frame where the visitors put together three singles, had productive outs, and were helped by a Samford error in the field. From that point on, Fuller settled into her best start of the season as she went five innings while allowing just rtwo earned runs on five hits.
The Bulldogs got on the board in the bottom of the second inning as
Katie Campbell led off with a solo blast to left field, her second of the season. Samford scratched across another run in the fourth as
Grier Bruce doubled to right field.
Addison Smith was bought on to pinch run and she was brought home the next batter as
Linsey Hargis flared a ball into right-center field for the RBI.
Jordyn Partain entered the game after Fuller walked the first batter in the sixth. Partain was faced with a bases-loaded jam with two out but she escaped as she struck out the Sycamore batter to retire the side.
The Dogs had their final chance in the seventh inning as the bottom of the order was up.
Ella Nelson led off with a single, getting the all-important tying run on base. A
McKayla Cothran single put runners at the corners with one away before she stole second base to put the winning run in scoring position.
Sarah Squillace brought home Nelson to tie the game and advanced Cothran to third with a sacrifice fly. After the pitching change,
Olivia Shaw ended up the hero as she laid down a perfect two-out bunt which left the defense without a play on her or Cothran at home plate as the Dogs walked off for the second time this weekend, capturing a 4-3 win.
The Bulldogs had 11 hits on the day too just five from Indiana State. Squillace, Campbell, Hargis, and Nelson all had multi-hit games.
The Bulldogs take their five-game winning streak into Starkville, Mississippi on Tuesday as they face Mississippi State. The opposing Bulldogs are 9-1 on the season and first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
