10-0 Bulldog Win Finishes Off Season Sweep of UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford softball team finished play today at the Green and Gold Classic hosted by UAB. The Bulldogs finished the weekend with a 2-2 record at the tournament and completed a 3-0 season sweep over cross-town rivals UAB for the season with a dominant 10-0, six-inning win tonight. The Bulldog's record moves to 8-5 with the win while the Blazers fall to 8-6.

The Bulldogs were ready to play from the jump as they scored four runs in the top of the first inning. McKayla Cothran led off and got aboard and was brought home on an Olivia Shaw double who then came home on a Katie Campbell double to the wall. Campbell and Linsey Hargis came in to score on a passed ball and an error as the Dogs jumped out to a 4-0 lead.

Samford gave the ball to Olivia Treece as she was most dominant throughout the night. She got out of her biggest jam in the bottom of the first inning when she forced a 1-2-3 inning-ending double play with the bases loaded. The freshman had her second complete game shut out in as many starts as she shutout Indiana State earlier in the season. Her final line was 6.0 innings, allowing just three hits and three walks to move to 2-0 on the year.

The Dogs added another run in the second inning as Ella Nelson led off with a double and was brought home on a Shaw sacrifice bunt. Samford added two more runs in the fifth as Cothran and Shaw each doubled to bring a run home and make their lead 7-0.

The dominant performance was capped off when Logan Champion left the yard for the third time in four games which added three more Bulldog runs and made the game 10-0. Samford had 17 hits in the game, compared to just three from the Blazers. Six different Bulldogs had multi-hit games while Cothran, Shaw, and Campbell all had three-hit games. Eight of the nine Bulldog starters scored a run on the game while Shaw and Champion led the way with three RBIs each.

Tonight was one of the best performances of the season for the Dogs as it was the third run-rule victory of their eight wins. Treece has looked overpowering at times in the circle when she is able to stay in the strike zone as she was tonight as she tried to establish herself as the team's No. 2 option behind Jordyn Partain.

The win marks the first time, the Bulldogs have won three-straight games against UAB in the series history. Samford has a quick turnaround as they are back in action tomorrow as they host West Georgia at home. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. with the Wolves entering the game with a 4-4 record on the season.
