LEXINGTON, Va. – The Samford University baseball team fell in the first game of its Southern Conference series at VMI, 11-8, Thursday evening at Gray-Minor Stadium.
With the loss, Samford fell to 20-17 overall and 6-4 in Southern Conference play. VMI improved to 25-14 overall and 5-5 in SoCon play.
Samford was led in the loss by
Parker McDonald, going 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI.
Trey Higgins went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI, while
Michael Gupton went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI.
Cade Carr also homered, going 2-for-5 with an RBI.
Jake Souders also went 2-for-5 for the Bulldogs.
Evan Steckmesser (3-2) pitched 2.0 innings in relief, giving up four runs, just three earned, on four hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford.
Miller Riggins,
Drew Druckenmiller and
John Malone also saw time on the mound for Samford.
For VMI, Ryan Peterson hit a grand slam, going 1-for-3 with four RBI. Owen Prince went 3-for-5 with two RBI. Kazuya Jordan went 3-for-4 with an RBI for the Keydets. Nathan Hawley (1-0) earned the win on the mound for VMI, tossing 3.2 innings, giving up two runs on six hits.
Samford struck first with a run in the third inning on a solo homer by Carr. VMI came back with two runs in the fourth inning and five runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-1 lead. The majority of the damage was done on a grand slam by Peterson.
The Bulldogs fought back with seven runs in the top of the sixth inning to retake the lead at 8-7. Higgins hit a solo home run, Gupton hit a two-run homer, McDonald hit a three-run double and Higgins had an RBI single in his second at-bat of the inning.
VMI, however, came back with two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 9-8 lead. Boston Torres and Cole Raile drove in a run each in the sixth. The Keydets added two more runs in the seventh inning to make the final score 11-8. Prince and Bradley Garner drove in a run each as VMI took a three-run lead.
The teams will continue their series with a game Friday evening. The first pitch is set for 5 p.m. (CT).
