Bulldogs Start Weekend With 11-0 Win Over ETSU

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Samford softball team returned to Southern Conference play today as they hosted ETSU in game one of a three-game series. It was all Bulldogs from the jump as they got out to an early lead and never were really threatened as they came away with an 11-0 victory. Samford moves to 24-15 on the season and remains atop the conference with a 6-1 league record.
The Dogs didn't waste any time getting on the board as they brought across two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Joi Hubbard walked and McKayla Cothran singled to lead off the game and the duo was brought home on a Katie Campbell double off the wall in right field.Â
Samford's offense staked Jordyn Partain to an early 2-0 lead and that would be all the run support she would need as she shut down the Buccaneers lineup for all five innings today. She went the distance in the run-rule victory, allowing just three hits and striking out three over her five innings of work to move to 11-8 on the season.
The game was put away in the bottom of the third inning, as the Bulldogs exploded for nine runs in the frame. Campbell delivered again with a two-RBI single that scored Cothran and Olivia Shaw that made the game 4-0. Grier Bruce and Logan Champion followed with singles to load the bases as Campbell scored on an Addison Smith walk and Bruce came home on a passed ball. Sarah Squillace brought home two with a single to make it 8-0 before Shaw delivered the final blow in the rally with a two-run blast to left field. The Dogs scored nine runs on six hits in the inning and led 11-0.
The Bucs only had two runners reach second base against Partain as she was in complete control on the afternoon. Samford finished with nine hits on the day, led by Cothran and Campbell who had mult- hit games as they each went 2-for-3 at the dish. Cothran scored three runs while Campbell drove in four as the heart of the lineup did major damage to ETSU pitching.
The Bulldogs look to secure a series victory tomorrow as they are back in action for games two and three of the series against the Bucs. Games are scheduled for 1 & 3 p.m. and links to the ESPN+ stream and live stats can be found here.
