Campbell Powers Bulldogs To 7-5 Win At West Georgia

CARROLLTON, Ga. – Samford catcher Katie Campbell homered and drove in six runs to lead the Bulldog softball team to a 7-5 win at West Georgia Wednesday evening.
 

Samford improved its season record to 27-15 with the win. West Georgia dropped to 9-28 with the loss.

Campbell went 4-for-4 with a home run and six RBI in the win. Joi Hubbard went 4-for-5, scoring two runs. Grier Bruce and Sarah Squillace added two hits each for the Bulldogs. Sara Bond (5-3) pitched 4.1 innings in relief, giving up just one run on two hits to earn the win for Samford.

West Georgia was led at the plate by Sky Ramos, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Blaire Bizette went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Megan Waites also went 2-for-4 for the Wolves. Jenna Samuel (5-6) pitched 4.1 innings in relief, allowing three runs on eight hits to take the loss for West Georgia.

Samford took the early lead with a run in the top of the first inning when Campbell singled to drive in McKayla Cothran for a 1-0 Bulldog lead. West Georgia, however, plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning to take a 3-1 lead. Ramos drove in two runs and Dixiana Sims drove in one for the Wolves.

Samford took the lead back with three runs in the top of the second inning. Olivia Shaw walked with the bases loaded for the first run of the inning. Campbell later singled to drive in two runs and give Samford a 4-3 lead.

West Georgia came back with a run in the third inning and another in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead. In the third inning, Samuel doubled to drive in the run. In the fourth inning, Bizette doubled to drive in another run and give West Georgia the lead.

The score remained the same until the top of the sixth inning. With one out in the inning, Hubbard doubled to right-center field. With two outs, Shaw walked. Campbell then homered to left-center field to give the Bulldogs the 7-5 lead.

This weekend, Samford will play a three-game Southern Conference series at UNC Greensboro. The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m. and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m.
