STATESBORO, Ga. – The Samford University soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision at Georgia Southern in the regular season opener for both teams Thursday evening at Bo Pitts Field.
Georgia Southern got the scoring started quickly when Bri Conley scored off an assist from Erin Wilkins just 30 seconds into the game for a 1-0 Eagles lead. Samford answered in the 37
th minute when
Sam De Luca scored off an assist from
Isa Moreno to knot the score at 1-1.
In the second half, GSU's Paisley Cathey netted an unassisted goal in the 67
th minute for a 2-1 Eagles' lead. Samford fought back again when
Clare Nicholas scored off an assist from
Sarah Holland in the 77
th minute to tie the score at 2-2. GSU's Addison Comer scored the game-winning goal off an assist from Conley in the 86th minute to give the Eagles the 3-2 win.
For Samford in the loss,
Martha Bishop led the team with three shots, followed by Nicholas, De Luca,
Annie McBride and
Mary-Ainsley Alack with two shots each. Goalkeeper
Peyton Hull played the full 90 minutes in goal, recording one save.
Georgia Southern was led by Conley, Caitlyn Conroy and Kaitlin Cook with two shots apiece. GSU goalkeeper Addison Daughtry saved five shots in the win for the Eagles.
Next up, Samford will remain on the road as the Bulldogs will play at Auburn on Sunday, Aug. 17, at 6 p.m.
