BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to the Alabama Crimson Tide Sunday afternoon at Shauna Yelton Field.
The game was played in front of an impressive crowd of 1,713 fans. With the loss, Samford fell to 0-2-1 on the season. Alabama improved to 4-0-0 with the win.
Alabama scored first when Gianna Paul scored off assists from Kiley Kukan and Nadia Ramadan in the 23
rd minute. Samford tied the score at 1-1 when
Avery Stevens scored on a penalty kick in the 30
th minute. Alabama's Ramadan scored off an assist from Sophia Martelli in the 36
th minute for a 2-1 Alabama lead.
In the second half, Alabama netted the lone goal when Breezie Brewer scored off an assist from Melina Rebimbas in the 78
th minute to make the final score 3-1.
As a team, Samford had 14 shots, to 17 for Alabama. Samford had four corner kicks, while Alabama had three.
Individually for Samford,
Langston Lilly had three shots, while Stevens,
Caroline Smith and
Martha Bishop had two each. Goalkeeper
Peyton Hull had two saves on the day.
For Alabama, Ramadan, Cameron Silva and Paul had three shots each. Goalkeeper Coralie Lallier saved three shots for the Crimson Tide.
Next up, Samford will play at Jacksonville State on Thursday, Aug. 28. The game is set for a 6 p.m. start from Jacksonville, Ala.
