GAME NOTES--SAMFORD VS. BAYLOR (PDF)
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford football team will go on the road for the first time this season when the Bulldogs play at Baylor Saturday at 11 a.m. at McLane Stadium.
Samford enters the game with a record of 0-2 after a 40-13 loss in the team's SoCon opener to The Citadel last Saturday. Baylor is currently 1-1 and the Bears are coming off a 48-45 double overtime win at SMU last Saturday.
Samford and Baylor are meeting for just the third time in football. The Bears have won both of the previous meetings. The first meeting in the series came in 2002, with Baylor taking a 50-12 win in Waco. The second meeting, also played in Waco, came in 2005, with the Bears taking a 48-14 win.
Samford opened the Southern Conference season with a 40-13 loss to The Citadel last Saturday. For Samford in the loss, starting quarterback
Quincy Crittendon completed 40-of-56 passes for 324 yards and three interceptions. Backup
Brady Stober completed 3-of-5 passes for 38 yards.
Jaden Gibson led the Samford receivers with 10 catches for 91 yards. Running back
C.J. Evans had seven rushes for 31 yards and a touchdown. The Samford defense was led by
Jaden Mosley with 11 tackles, followed by
Carson Sloan with 10 tackles.
Alex Applefield had a fumble recovery for the home Bulldogs.
Saturday's game marks Samford's first game in the state of Texas since a 48-14 loss at TCU in the season opener of the 2014 season. Samford has an all-time record of 0-6 against teams from the state of Texas. Samford has played the following Texas teams: Baylor (0-2), North Texas (0-1), Stephen F. Austin (0-2) and TCU (0-1). All six games except for the 1995 meeting with Stephen F. Austin have been played on the road.
QUICK STRIKES
In the 10-plus seasons under head coach Chris Hatcher, Samford has made a habit of quick scoring drives. In Hatcher's time at Samford, the Bulldogs have had 211 scoring drives that lasted two minutes or less and 99 that have lasted one minute or less.
SAMFORD ON THE ROAD
Samford has seven road games on the 2025 schedule and Saturday's game marks the first of those contests. Last season, Samford was 1-4 on the road. Under head coach Chris Hatcher, Samford has a mark of 23-33 away from the friendly confines of Pete Hanna Stadium.
SAMFORD AGAINST TEXAS TEAMS
Samford has an all-time record of 0-6 against teams from the state of Texas. Samford has played the following Texas teams: Baylor (0-2), North Texas (0-1), Stephen F. Austin (0-2) and TCU (0-1). All games except for the 1995 meeting with Stephen F. Austin have been played on the road. This marks the first time Samford has played a Texas team since playing at TCU in the 2014 season opener.
SAMFORD AGAINST BIG 12 TEAMS
Samford has an all-time record of 3-11 against the current members of the Big 12 Conference, including an 0-2 record against Saturday's opponent, Baylor. Samford has played the following Big 12 schools: Baylor (0-2), UCF (3-8) and TCU (0-1).
ON THIS DATE
Samford has an all-time record of 2-4 in games played on Sept. 13. The last time the Bulldogs played on the date was in 2008 in a 34-10 loss at Ole Miss.
MOSLEY LEADING THE SOCON STATISTICS
Samford senior linebacker
Jaden Mosley leads the Southern Conference in tackles after the first two weeks of the season. He had eight tackles in the season opener against West Georgia and then he tallied 11 tackles in last Saturday's SoCon opener against The Citadel. He has 19 total tackles, tying him with Tyrik McDaniel of The Citadel for the most tackles in the SoCon.
