BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford soccer team earned its seventh shutout of the season with an impressive 2-0 win over Chattanooga Sunday afternoon at Shauna Yelton Field.
With the win, Samford's record moved to 4-2-4 overall and 1-0-1 In Southern Conference play. Chattanooga dropped to 7-3-1 overall and 1-1 In league play.
"I thought everything about this game was hard," Samford head coach
Todd Yelton said. "We spent a lot of energy Thursday night against Western Carolina. For the kids to pick themselves up off the mat and fight today against what I think is a pretty fantastic team in Chattanooga against a great coach and coaching staff, it was hard. I can't tell you how proud I am of my kids to be able to gut it out on a really, really tough day."
Samford's
Brooklyn Miller got the scoring started in the 30th minute with her goal off an assist from
Hanna Rae Himes. In the 85th minute,
Sam De Luca netted her team-leading fifth goal of the season off another assist from Himes.
As a team, Samford had 14 shots, to 15 for Chattanooga. The Bulldogs had six corner kicks, to four for the Mocs.
Samford goalkeeper
Peyton Hull earned her seventh shutout of the season. The sophomore saved a career-high 10 shots in posting the clean sheet. De Luca led Samford with three shots, while Miller and
Mamie Carman had two shots each.
For Chattanooga, Caroline Richvalski had a team-high four shots, all coming on goal. Chattanooga goalkeeper Caroline Ekern saved five shots, while allowing two goals.
Next up, Samford will play at Wofford on Friday, Sept. 26. The game is set for a 5 p.m. (CT) start from Spartanburg, S.C.
