SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Samford soccer team went on the road for the first time in Southern Conference play and came away with an impressive 4-1 win at Wofford Friday evening.
With the win, Samford's record improved to 5-2-4 overall and 2-0-1 in Southern Conference play. Wofford fell to 3-6-4 overall and 0-2-1 in league action with the loss.
Sam De Luca,
Ava Baumann,
Sarah Holland and
Fleming Dean scored a goal each for the Bulldogs.
Caroline Smith assisted on three of the four goals. Goalkeeper
Peyton Hull had one save in earning the win.
For Wofford, Ansley Elizalde scored the team's lone goal. Goalkeeper Elizabeth Navola saved four shots, while allowing the four goals.
Samford struck first when De Luca scored off an assist from Smith in the seventh minute of the contest. Wofford tied the score at 1-1 when Elizalde scored off assists from Ellie Gower and Saachi Bureau in the 28th minute. Samford took the lead back in the 37th minute when Baumann scored her first career goal off an assist from Smith, giving Samford a 2-1 lead.
In the second half, Holland pushed the lead to 3-1 with her goal in the 54th minute of the game. Dean netted a goal off an assist from Smith in the 87th minute to make the final score 4-1.
Next up, Samford will return home to play host to The Citadel for the program's annual Shauna's House game on Thursday, Oct. 2. The game is set for a 4 p.m. start from Shauna Yelton Field.
