BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –  The Samford soccer team earned its third-straight shutout win in a 2-0 Senior Day victory over Western Kentucky Sunday afternoon at Shauna Yelton Field.

With the win, Samford improved its record to 3-2-1 on the season. Western Kentucky fell to 3-4-0 with the loss.

"That was a hard game," Samford head coach Todd Yelton said. "And the thing about that game is, it prepares you for the league. It was tough, physical, direct, all of it, all that you face when everything matters. It was hot, and to grind out a win in that scenario is big."

Samford's Sam De Luca got the scoring started with her goal off assists from Fleming Dean and Jessica Askey in the eighth minute of the contest to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. The goal was De Luca's team-leading third goal of the season.

The game stayed at 1-0 until midway through the second half. Becca Koenig scored her first career goal when she scored off an assist from Annie McBride in the 66th minute to make the score 2-0.

For the game, De Luca, Sarah Holland and Mamie Carman led Samford with three shots each. Goalkeeper Peyton Hull posted her fourth shutout of the season, saving one shot without allowing a goal.

As a team, Samford had 14 shots, to six for WKU. The Bulldogs had three corner kicks, to four for the Hilltoppers.

WKU was led by six different players with one shot each. Goalkeeper Maddie Davis saved eight shots, while allowing the two goals.

Next up, Samford will play at Belmont on Thursday, Sept. 11. The game is set for a 6:30 p.m. start from Nashville, Tenn.
