BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team earned a series win over Belmont in the team's season-opening series with an impressive 10-1 win over the Bruins in the series finale Saturday afternoon at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
With the win, Samford improved its season record to 2-1. Belmont fell to 1-2 with the loss.
Samford was led in the win by
Cade Carr, going 2-for-5 with a double and three RBI.
Jake Souders went 2-for-3 with a double and one RBI.
Andrew Marble (1-0) pitched 5.1 innings, allowing no runs on one hit and striking out four batters to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
For Belmont, Brody Langlotz drove in the Bruins' lone run, going 1-for-2 on the day. Sam Heyman (0-1) took the loss on the mound for the Bruins, tossing 1.1 innings, giving up five runs on two hits.
Samford got off to a quick start, plating three runs in the first inning and three more in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead. In the first inning, Carr and
Luke Boykin drove in a run each and Souders scored from third on a double steal. In the second inning,
Gus Gandy,
Jackson Harris and Souders drove in a run each for the Bulldogs.
After Belmont cut the lead to 6-1 with a run in the top of the sixth inning, Samford plated two runs in the seventh inning and two more runs in the eighth inning to make the final score 10-1. In the seventh inning, Boykin drove in a run with a single and later scored on an error. In the eighth inning, Carr doubled to drive in the final two runs of the contest.
Samford will next play host to Alabama on Tuesday, Feb. 17. The game is set for a 4 p.m. start from Joe Lee Griffin Field.
