Bulldogs Outslugged at No. 17 Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. – The Samford softball team hit the road to face No. 16 Georgia tonight in a midweek battle. The Bulldogs fell behind early, but battled back with a 6-run fourth inning before falling 14-8. The Bulldogs move to 4-7 on the season following the defeat.

Shannon Weems sparked Samford in the opening inning, delivering an RBI single to bring home Olivia Shaw for an early lead. Georgia quickly answered with a solo home run in the bottom half, then seized control with a nine-run second inning powered by multiple home runs and a string of base hits. Samford found itself trailing 10-1 after just two innings.

Momentum shifted in the fourth as Samford's offense surged. Weems came through with a two-run single, and Shaw followed with a two-RBI single of her own. Brandy Phillips and Ella Nelson each added RBI hits during a six-run rally that trimmed the deficit to 13-7 and extended the contest.

Katie Campbell showcased her power in the sixth with a solo home run to center, her fifth of the season and second multi-hit game of the year. Weems matched her season high with three hits and three RBIs, surpassing the 10-hit and 10-RBI marks for the season. Shaw scored twice and pushed her RBI total into double digits. Despite the late push, Samford could not close the gap, as Georgia added insurance and the Bulldogs' pitching staff struggled against a potent lineup, issuing 10 walks and allowing 14 earned runs. Makinley Turner got the start but was charged with the loss after going 1.1 innings.

While Samford remains winless all-time against Georgia, the Bulldogs' offense produced against a ranked SEC opponent and showed resilience to avoid an early run-rule finish. Despite the loss, the game featured several individual milestones and highlighted areas of needed improvement in the circle as the non-conference slate continues.

Up next, the Bulldogs travel to play in the Bulldog Invitational hosted by Mississippi State. Samford faces MSU, Belmont, and Delaware State twice.
