Samford Baseball Earns 7-2 Road Win At Troy

TROY, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team picked up a big non-conference road win, earning a 7-2 victory at in-state rival Troy Tuesday evening at Riddle-Pace Field.

With the win, Samford improved its record to 10-13 on the season. Troy fell to 10-14 with the loss.

Samford received strong pitching performance from its three pitchers that saw time on the mound. Noah Berry started the game and tossed 3.1 innings, allowing no runs on three hits. Palmer O'Beirne (1-0) earned the win, pitching 2.2 innings, giving up no runs on two hits. John Whitney picked up his first save of the season, throwing the final 3.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits and striking out six batters.

"Noah set the tone early," Samford head coach Tony David said. "He was really good and he pounded the strike zone. I thought the umpire was consistent, but it was a tighter zone and that makes what our guys did that much more impressive. Palmer came in with a couple of guys on and just did a great job of getting out of that jam and that kind of changed the feel of everything. And then Whitney was electric on the back end."

For Samford at the plate, Gus Gandy went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Cade Carr, Pierce Dutton and Parker McDonald added one RBI each.

For Troy, Aaron Piassecki went 3-for-5 and Drew Nelson went 3-for-4 at the plate. Caden Reeves drove in the Trojans' two runs, going 1-for-1 on the night. Matt Dill (2-1) took the loss on the mound, pitching 3.0 innings, giving up two runs on five hits.

Samford struck first, plating two runs in the top of the third inning. Jackson Harris singled and advanced to second base on an error and McDonald scored on the error for the game's first run. Carr later singled to drive in Harris to give Samford a 2-0 lead.

The Bulldogs added two more runs in the sixth inning to push their lead to 4-0. With two outs in the inning, Gandy hit a two-run home run to right field to give the Bulldogs a four-run advantage.

In the top of the eighth inning, Samford tacked on two more runs. Gandy singled to drive in the first run of the inning. McDonald later walked with the bases loaded to make the score 6-0.

The Bulldogs added another run in the top of the ninth inning to push the lead to 7-0. Dutton singled up the middle to drive in Harris for a seven-run Samford lead.

Troy plated both of its runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. Reeves doubled to right field to drive in Nelson and Houston Markham to make the final score 7-2.

Samford will return home to play host to Presbyterian this weekend. The teams are set to play Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field.
