Samford Baseball Drops Hard-Fought Game At No. 7 Auburn, 6-2

AUBURN, Ala. – The Samford University baseball team fell in a hard-fought game at No. 7 Auburn, 6-2, Tuesday evening at Plainsman Park.

With the loss, Samford fell to 5-7 on the season. Auburn improved its record to 10-2 with the win.

"I thought our guys competed well and gave ourselves a lot of chances," Samford head coach Tony David said. "We had the tying run on in the seventh and at the plate in the eighth. Parker hit a laser and their guy made a great play. We have to be better on the bases in that spot to not get doubled up. Lots of good at bats to put ourselves in position and just needed a couple of big hits with runners in scoring position."

Samford was led at the plate by Cade Carr, hitting a solo home run in a 1-for-2 performance. Jeffrey Ince went 2-for-5 with a run scored. Pierce Dutton went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Gus Gandy went 2-for-4.

Noah Berry (1-1) pitched 1.2 innings, giving up two runs on three hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford. Austin Tommasini, Will Andre, Drew Druckenmiller, Trey Sanders and Zak Spurrier also saw time on the mound for the Bulldogs.

"Tommasini was electric in relief that started with a big strike out in a bases loaded spot," David said. "He gave us a chance. Our guys put on a show again defensively. I like where we are heading as a team. Just have to find a way to produce runs on these nights against another great team."

For Auburn, Eric Guevara homered, going 1-for-4 with two RBI. Chase Fralick went 2-for-4 for the Tigers. Andreas Alvarez (1-1) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up no runs on three hits to earn the win on the mound for Auburn.

Auburn jumped on top in the first inning when Guevara hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Bristol Carter for a 1-0 Tigers' lead. In the second inning, Carter singled to drive in Mason McCraine to make the score 2-0. In the third inning, Guevara hit a solo home run to right field to push the Auburn lead to 3-0.

Samford got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning when Carr hit a solo home run to left-center field to cut the Auburn lead to 3-1. In the bottom of the seventh inning, Auburn added two more runs. Chris Rembert singled to drive in Carter to push the lead to 4-1. McCraine then singled to drive in Bub Terrell to make the score 5-1.

Samford added another run in the top of the eighth inning when Ince scored from third base when Parker McDonald lined into a double play with the bases loaded to cut the lead to 5-2. In the bottom of the eighth inning, Auburn's Ethin Bingaman scored on a ground out by Terrell to make the score 6-2.

Samford will next play a four-game series at Kennesaw State this weekend. The teams are scheduled to play a single game Friday at 3 p.m., a doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m. and a single game Sunday at 1 p.m. All four games can be seen live on ESPN+.
