Samford Baseball Earns 10-4 Win In Series Opener Versus VMI

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford baseball team opened its series with VMI with an impressive 10-4 win Friday evening at Joe Lee Griffin Field.

With the win, Samford improved its record to 15-17 overall and 3-4 in Southern Conference play. VMI fell to 24-9 overall and 2-5 in league play.

"This was a good job," Samford head coach Tony David said. "Joe Lee was good in the beginning and we did a lot of really good things. The negative is, you're not going to win a ton of games when you walk three in a row in an inning and four in a row in the next inning. But we pitched in crunch time when we had to."

Samford was led at the plate in the win by Luke Boykin, going 2-for-4 with a double, a home run and two RBI. Cade Carr went 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI, while Trey Higgins and Parker McDonald had two hits and an RBI each.

Joseph Lee started the game on the mound for Samford, pitching 4.2 innings, giving up three runs on two hits. John Whitney (2-0) earned the win on the mound, tossing 2.1 innings, allowing no runs on one hit. Zak Spurrier pitched the final 2.0 innings, giving up one run on two hits.

For VMI, Grayson Fitzwater went 2-for-4 with a home run and an RBI. Cole Raile went 2-for-5 for the Keydets. Justin Spiegel (0-2) pitched 3.2 innings, allowing six runs on seven hits to take the loss on the mound for VMI.

Samford jumped on top first with three runs in the second inning. Boykin hit a two-run home run to left field for the first two runs of the game. Jackson Harris later had an RBI single for a 3-0 Samford lead.

After VMI plated a run in the third inning and another in the fourth inning to cut the lead to 3-2, Samford added three runs in the bottom of the fourth to push the lead to 6-2. Jake Souders drove in the first run of the inning with an infield single. Carr then singled to drive in a run and Higgins later had a sacrifice fly to push Samford's lead to four runs.

VMI added a run in the top of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 6-3, but Samford came back with two runs in the bottom of the frame to make it 8-3. Pierce Dutton and Souders drove in a run each as Samford took a five-run lead.

Samford added two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to make the score 10-3. Carr led the inning off with a home run. McDonald later singled to drive in Samford's 10th run of the game. VMI plated one final run in the top of the ninth inning to make the final score 10-4.

The teams will continue the series with a game Saturday at 2 p.m. at Joe Lee Griffin Field. The game can be seen live on ESPN+ and live stats will be available as well. For links to follow all of Samford's games this season, click on the following link: 2026 SCHEDULE.
