HOOVER, Ala. – The Samford baseball team dropped a 14-2 decision to sixth-ranked Auburn Tuesday night at the Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.
 
With the loss, Samford dropped its record to 20-19. Auburn improved its record to 28-12 with the win.
 
In the loss for Samford, Cade Carr went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Palmer O'Beirne (1-1) pitched a third of an inning, giving up eight runs, seven earned, on six hits to take the loss on the mound for Samford.
 
Auburn was led at the plate by Eddie Madrigal, going 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Eric Guevara went 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI, while Ethin Bingaman went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. L.J. Cormier (1-0) pitched 2.0 innings in relief, giving up no runs on one hit to earn the win for the Tigers.
 
Auburn jumped on top early with nine runs in the top of the first inning. In the bottom of the first, with one out, Jake Souders walked. Carr then homered to left field to cut the lead to 9-2.
 
The Tigers added two runs in the third inning, one run in the fourth inning and two runs in the fifth inning to build a 14-2 lead. The game ended after seven innings on the mercy rule.
 
This weekend, Samford will remain out of conference play by hosting USC Upstate in a weekend series. The teams are scheduled to play Friday at 6 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.
