GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Samford baseball team pounded out five home runs and five doubles in a 13-1, seven-inning win over UNC Greensboro on the first day of the Southern Conference Tournament Wednesday evening at Fluor Field.
With the win, Samford improves to 29-24 on the season. The third-seeded Bulldogs advance to Thursday's winner's bracket game against second-seeded Western Carolina at 11:30 a.m. (CT). UNCG fell to 23-32 and the Spartans will take on the loser of the Samford-Western Carolina game Thursday at 6:30 p.m. (CT).
Samford was led in the game by
Trey Higgins, going 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double and three RBI.
Luke Boykin went 2-for-4 with a grand slam and four RBI.
Eddie Marshall and
Gus Gandy also had a home run each in the win.
Cade Carr went 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Jake Souders went 2-for-3 with a double and
Pierce Dutton went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI.
Joseph Lee (4-2) pitched 6.0 innings, allowing one run on five hits and striking out seven batters to earn the win on the mound for Samford.
Will Andre pitched the final inning, giving up just one hit.
For UNCG, Luke Holland and Brantley Truitt each went 2-for-3. Ethan Brittain drove in the Spartans' lone run in a 1-for-2 performance.
Samford plated three runs in the first inning, two runs in the second inning and one run in the third inning to jump out to a 6-0 lead. Carr drove in the first run of the game. Higgins then hit a two-run home run for a 3-0 lead. In the second inning Gandy hit a solo home run and Carr had an RBI single to make it 5-0. In the third inning, Marshall hit a solo home run to make the score 6-0.
After UNCG plated its lone run in the top of the fifth inning, Samford added seven runs in the bottom of the fifth. Higgins hit a solo home run to start the scoring in the bottom of the fifth. Dutton then doubled to drive in a run and Carr had an RBI single to make it 9-1. Boykin then delivered the big blow with a grand slam to make the final score 13-1.
