BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford soccer team hosted Belmont for its home opener Sunday evening, earning a 2-0 win at Shauna Yelton Field.
"Tonight took a bit of grit and determination," Samford head coach
Todd Yelton said. "It was a full team effort. I really, in a lot of ways, am incredibly proud of our reserves who came on tonight in the first half and changed it there for us and got us a goal, because it was hard sledding for sure."
With the win, Samford is now 1-0-1 on the young season. Belmont fell to 0-1-1 with the loss.

Martha Bishop scored a goal each for the Bulldogs. Junior and Florida transfer
Brinley Murphy had two assists, while freshman
Addison Smith added an assist.
Samford goalkeeper
Peyton Hull posted her second-straight shutout to open her junior season. Hull had three saves in keeping the Bruins off the scoreboard.
For Belmont, Laken Whittington had a team-high three shots. Belmont goalkeeper Greta Genie saved 10 shots, while allowing two goals in the loss.
Laurendine got the scoring started, netting her first career goal in the 38
th minute off assists from Murphy and Smith. Bishop scored her goal in the 76
th minute off an assist from Murphy, giving the Bulldogs the 2-0 win.
Samford will next play host to Georgia State on Thursday, Aug. 20, at 6 p.m. at Shauna Yelton Field.
