Volleyball Falls To UC Riverside In Home Opener

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford volleyball team fell to UC Riverside in its home opener, 3-1 (23-25, 21-25, 25-22, 29-31), Sunday afternoon in the Pete Hanna Center.

The match opened with several points back and forth but ultimately the Bulldogs fell in the first set 25-23, then 25-21 in the second set. Samford won the third set by a score of 25-22, but fell in the fourth and final set 29-31.

Freshman outside hitter Amyra Burchik led the Bulldogs with 17 kills and a hitting percentage of .130. Senior Ally Cordes followed with 12 kills and a hitting percentage of .096. In her second match as a Bulldog, redshirt freshman Alison Ohlinger had a total of 44 assists and two aces. Samford would finish with a hitting percentage of .122 out of 172 attempts. They would also finish with a total of 14 blocks.

For UC Riverside, Andrea Brewer led with 19 kills and had a hitting percentage of .047. Juliette D'Eliseo followed behind her with 14 kills and a hitting percentage of .353. UC Riverside would finish as a team with a hitting percentage of .224. They would also finish with 24 blocks.

Samford will continue its season on Friday September 4, when the Bulldogs face Middle Tennessee at 2 p.m. at the Curb Event Center.
