BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Samford soccer team remained unbeaten in Southern Conference play with a 2-0 win over Mercer Friday evening at Shauna Yelton Field.

With the win, Samford improved its record to 5-2-3 overall and 2-0 in SoCon play. Mercer dropped to 5-5-1 overall and 0-2 in league play.

"This is what you find in a SoCon battle," Samford head coach Todd Yelton said. "Mercer's got a good side. They've got plenty of good players, they fought like crazy. Nothing about this was easy. I think the kids did fantastic and that was a pretty physical match and for us to put two on the board is a pretty good feeling."

For Samford on the night, Brinley Murphy had five shots, while Martha Bishop had three. Sam De Luca and Mamie Carman scored a goal each for the Bulldogs. Jessica Askey, Alex Parr and Caroline Smith had an assist each. Samford goalkeeper Peyton Hull saved four shots in posting her fifth shutout of the season.

Mercer was led by Ariel Bolton with three shots. Mercer goalkeeper Avery Parker saved three shots, while allowing the two goals.

De Luca got the scoring started with her goal in the 16^th minute off an assist from Askey. The teams went to halftime with Samford leading, 1-0. Carman netted her goal in the 47^th minute off assists from Parr and Smith for a 2-0 Samford lead.

Samford will play host to Wofford on Thursday, Oct. 1, with the game set for a 6 p.m. start from Shauna Yelton Field.
