Matthew Griffin


Matthew Griffin is in the midst his third season as an assistant athletic trainer at Samford University where he serves as the primary athletic trainer for the Bulldogs’ men’s basketball program. His responsibilities include prevention, immediate care, management, treatment and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for Samford’s student-athletes.
 
Griffin also coordinates any other medical needs of the basketball team while in communication with team physicians and other health-care specialists.
 
Prior to joining Samford in the summer of 2013, Griffin worked for the Cullman Regional Medical Center and covered local high schools in the North Alabama area. During his stint from 2011-13, he handled the athletic training duties for Hayden High School (2011), Vinemont High School (2011-12) and Fairview High School (2012-13), where he covered football, baseball, softball, boys and girls basketball, track and field and cross country.
 
Griffin, a native of Brunswick, Ga., attended the University of Georgia from 2003-08 and graduated with a bachelor of science in kinesiology—athletic training. Throughout his time at Georgia, he worked as an athletic training assistant with the football team in 2006, the equestrian team in 2007 and with the men’s basketball team in 2007-08.
 
During his final season at Georgia, the Bulldogs’ basketball team rallied to win the 2008 Southeastern Conference Tournament and earned an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament.
 
Griffin attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) from 2008-10, where he earned his masters of education in health education. During his time with the Blazers, he primarily worked with the football team, as well as the men’s and women’s golf programs.
