Alex DelPiombo

DelPiombo enters her second season at Samford after serving a stint at Morehead State University where she served on the coaching staff as the assistant volleyball coach and the director of volleyball operations for two years following a four-year playing career at Gannon (Pa.) University.

DelPiombo’s experience as a decorated player and coach has Samford head coach Derek Schroeder excited and he believes that she’s an up and coming star in the coaching ranks.

“For my second straight hire I consider myself very lucky to find someone in Alex Delpiombo,” Schroeder said. “More than a few coaches I trust and admire in Division I volleyball have recommended Delpiombo as a talented up and coming coach.”

On the heels of a very successful 2013 season, Schroeder feels like DelPiombo’s work ethic, knowledge and passion for the game is the right fit to keep the program headed in the right direction.

“Alex is going to work very hard and bring passion to the office and practice gym,” Shroeder exclaimed. “She is going to provide us a knowledgeable setter coach which I have not had on staff for a number of years!”

DelPiombo’s time as an assistant coach at MSU provided her the opportunity to gain experience in setter training and other aspects of court training as well as recruiting, team academic advising and scheduling. She also was very involved in community relations as she promoted and organized summer camps and kids clinics.

DelPiombo also served as director of operations at MSU, where she handled a majority of the video work for the Eagles as well as served in a variety of other day-to-day support roles. She helped guide the Eagles to a conference-record 24-match winning streak and the team’s third straight Ohio Valley Conference title.

She helped MSU earn another OVC championship ring in 2013 and was part of the second Eagle team to advance to the NCAA Tournament.

DelPiombo was a recipient of a 2011 American Volleyball Coaches Association Coaches4Coaches Scholarship.

During her playing career at Gannon University DelPiombo was the starting setter her final two seasons and was team captain for two seasons as well. She finished her career with 1,754 assists to rank seventh in school history. DelPiombo also helped guide Gannon to three NCAA Tournament berths.

As a four-time member of the school’s Dean’s List, she was also a four-time winner of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Scholar-Athlete award during her career.

She graduated in 2012 with a bachelor’s degree in communications.

A native of Monroe, Mich., she attended St. Mary’s Catholic Central High School where she was a two-sport (volleyball, softball) star. DelPiombo led her volleyball team to the state title her junior season.
