Box Score EUGENE, Ore.—The Samford women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought contest on the road, falling by a score of 72-61, at Oregon Tuesday evening in the Matthew Knight Arena.
The Bulldogs got off to a slow start, falling behind 11-0, but fought back to tie the game, but could never get over the hump, eventually falling by 11 points.
“I thought this was another learning experience for our team,” Samford head coach
Mike Morris said. “The first few minutes when we spotted them 11 points was huge. But, after that, I thought we did some good stuff.”
Samford was led in scoring by senior guard
Jazmine Martin with 13 points, all in the second half. Freshman guard
Krista Stricklin posted her first career double-double, scoring a career-high 12 points and grabbing a career-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore
Taylor Reece also scored 12 points, while junior
Shelby Campbell added 11 points for the Bulldogs.
“I was really pleased with the way
Krista Stricklin played, and I was really pleased with the way
Jazmine Martin played in the second half,” Morris said. “Christy (Robinson) and Taylor (Reece) did a great job getting the ball inside, we just didn't finish consistently, and that is an area we have to improve on.”
Oregon was led by Danielle Love with 17 points. Ariel Thomas scored 15 points, while Jordan Loera added 14 points. Jillian Alleyne scored 11 points and grabbed 19 rebounds for the Ducks.
As a team, Samford shot 33.8 percent overall and 33.3 percent from three-point range, while Oregon made 40.7 percent of its shots overall and 37.5 percent from beyond the arc. Oregon outrebounded Samford, 43-35.
After Oregon's 11-0 run to start the game, the teams traded baskets over the next several minutes until, with Samford trailing, 20-8, the Bulldogs went on a 14-2 run to tie the score at 22-22 with 9:06 to go in the half after a three-pointer by Stricklin.
Oregon scored the next six points to take a 28-22 lead with 7:48 left in the opening period after a three-pointer by Loera. Samford fought back to cut the lead to three points at 30-27 with 5:20 to go in the half after a three-pointer by Stricklin. Oregon, however, scored the final seven points of the half to take a 37-27 lead into halftime.
Samford opened the second half with a 10-0 run to tie the game at 37-37 with 17:39 to go in the game after a three-pointer by Martin. Oregon answered with a 9-0 run of its own to take a 46-37 with 13:53 to go after a three-pointer by Chynna Miley. Samford fought back to cut the lead to five points at 49-44 with 9:38 to go after a jumper by Reece.
Oregon scored six of the next seven points to push its lead back out to 10 points at 55-45 with 6:55 to go after a jumper by Thomas. The Bulldogs came back again to close to within five points at 58-53, 60-55 and 62-57, but Samford could get no closer, eventually falling by a score of 72-61.
With the loss, Samford falls to 5-4 on the season. Oregon improves to 2-8 with the win.
Samford will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 22, when the Bulldogs play at Clemson. The game is scheduled for a 12 p.m. (CT) start from the Clemson campus.
